Shetland lies 600 miles (960km) north of London. More than 100 islands, just 15 of them inhabited, span the 100 miles (145km) between Fair isle and Out Stack, the northernmost point in Britain.
Because the Shetland Island’s are so far north, from mid-May to mid-July, the “simmer dim” (summer twilight) when the sun only dips below the horizon for a few hours. In fine weather this can brings the islands almost 19 hours of sunshine a day. In the winter and spring months Shetland is an ideal place to view the magnificant Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).

Travelling to Shetland by sea with Northlink Ferries:
For thousands of years people have, of necessity, travelled to and from Shetland by sea. Many still favour this route as it is safe and reliable and of course you can bring your own vehicle if you wish.
There is a certain magic about arriving in Shetland on the ferry from Aberdeen: the first sight of Fair Isle; passing Sumburgh Head and the island of Mousa; and outstanding views of the rugged coastline.
Travelling to Shetland by air with Flybe:
Flybe offer a daily service to Sumburgh Airport, the fourth largest airport in Scotland. Numerous flight arrive per day from Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness and Kirkwall. There is also a summer service from Bergen in Norway.
